The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
